looking forward to the unexpected.

addendum on regret
if the decisions i've made have gotten me this far, i must be doing something right.
media and manhood
it feels like i've learned all i can from my father. both biological and surrogate (e.g. hip hop).
frighteningly refreshing.

regret
is looking deep into happiness' full,
almond eyes and saying firmly, "no."
(redemption, perhaps,
is a new set of eyes.)

things to remember in 2009
there is much to do.
who are you? be that.
word of the year: relentless.
life is diamond-shaped.

almost saw a bad show ...
but then:
The Roots played a Fela joint
James Poyser and Robert Glasper showed up
"stack chips like a corner store"
dude on the sax killed it (Gary Price?)
and Bilal stole the motherfucking show.
as a bonus, Q-Tip showed up high
got sonned by BT
and played some mediocre drums—
it was fun(ny).
lastly, ?uest is a genius.
the end.

snow day
When it snows, I
walk these streets
afraid to run, lest I fall
and because I've been
told I am
unable to fly
by those who have never
tried.
And so
we step lightly
and
defeated, imagining what the
weather must be like above
the clouds.

situation
doin my own thang
do it my own way
can't get too caught up in the situation

doin it my own way
i can't get too caught up in yo shit, baby
cuz yo shit, baby
will drive me crazy

at my funeral
if the turnout is slim
i hope the attendees
understand the special company
they are part of, and
realize how much i cherished them.

notes to self
keep reminding yourself what love is.
lead by example.
live relentlessly.
"i never sat back feeling sorry for myself
if you don't give me heaven, i raise hell"
let go.
value of friends vs. value of ends:
they don't have to be mutually exclusive.
no self-doubt!
et cetera.

love &c. part 11.
a lot's been written about
a life without love.
that is, it sucks.
but love—
the pursuit,
the submersion—
shouldn't get
in the way of life
as it charges relentlessly
forward.
love should be life's companion.
the converse would be
deadly.

untitled
Peak train to New Haven
(what happens there stays forever);
window seat,
greeting the fleeting
street lights with
vague interest.
But on the darkest nights
seeing only my reflection
in the pane.
